Newbie here.
I have Plex Media Server on a Mac Pro serving video to Plex Home Theater on a Mac Mini. All file formats play just fine except for HEVC h.265 files. I always get the 'Please Wait' message for a couple of seconds when starting the file or when trying to skip back or forward. Drawing free for mac. I use a Mac Mini as my server and client. It runs Plex Media Server (PMS) and Plex Home Theater (PHT). By using a Mac Mini as your server you could also use your AppleTV using the excellent 'PlexConnect', which is a user created solution to run Plex on the ATV, no jailbreak required.
I've previously used a Boxee Box and NAS for media server and storage and it was great - not a single problem and simple user experience for 4 years. Sadly, Boxee has now died and i need an alternative. Someone has recommended Plex but I understand that i will need some hardware to act as the media server? The NAS i have is a dlink DNS 320 and understand that this would not cope with transcoding 1080p movies so i need an alternative. I thought about Apple TV but understand they are locked down and i'm not prepared to jailbreak..so how about the mac mini? From looking at a few vids on youtube i see that its possible but is it a good setup? I will connect the mac mini to my Nas over ethernet and HDMI to my TV. When i boot the mac mini or wake it from its sleep i want plex to load instantly (i'm not going to use the mac mini for anything else other than plex). When loaded i want to be able to play any downloded media file type i have (mkv, mp4, avi etc).
Is this a good setup? Picture editors for mac.
What do i need to download/install?
Any recommendations?
